Biophysics and Modeling of Mechanotransduction in Neurons: A Review

Mechanosensing is a key feature through which organisms can receive inputs from the environment and convert them into specific functional behavioral outputs. Mechanosensation occurs in many cells tissues, regulating plethora of molecular processes based on distribution forces stresses both at cell membrane intracellular organelles levels, complex interactions between cells’ microstructures, cytoskeleton, extracellular matrix. Although several primary secondary mechanisms have been shown to contribute mechanosensation, fundamental pathway simple mammals involves presence specialized sensory neurons different types mechanosensitive ion channels neuronal membrane. In this contribution, we present review main proven be significantly involved mechanotransduction neurons. Further, discuss recent studies focused biological modeling channels’ gating, scales levels details.
